35mm Projectors Going to the Scrapyard

As you certainly know, more and more countries are now 100% digital, at least cinema-wise, and this is mainly due to the rise of 3D stereoscopy: South Korea, Singapore, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands are 100% converted to digital. At the end if 2012, 68.7% of the worldwide cinema projectors park was digital and the figure is expected to reach 90% by end of 2013 (40 to 50% of them 3D capable). With nearly 130,000 screens in the world, there are fewer than 30,000 35mm screens left to convert.

Meanwhile, in the USA

In the U.S., there were still 5,500 screens to convert to digital, many of them indie theaters, although Cinedigm’s NATO-CBG program will help many of these to switch. Those that remain — mostly art-house or small-town venues — may be picked up by Scrabble Ent.’s VPF-backed leasing system.
