Is Pinlight Technology the Future of 3D Virtual Reality?
Andrew Maimone is developing its own version of the Oculus Rift. But his version don't put displays in front of your eyes, it projects light directly onto your cornea.
The prototype has a few shortcomings but offers a very wide field of view (100°) that other methods are unable to provide. Details in the video here under.
Pinlight Displays Presentation
The above video demonstrates a design and early results for compact and wide field of view optical see-through augmented reality eyeglasses. The eyeglasses operate using a tiled array of microprojectors formed using point light sources and a spatial light modulator.
Andrew Maimone is a Ph.D student at UNC-Chapel Hill currently studying near-eye and 3D displays under Prof. Henry Fuchs in a research group that is part of the BeingThere International Research Centre for Tele-Presence and Tele-Collaboration.
