Titanic 3D: A 3D Conversion That Works

on Sunday, 08 April 2012 11:22. Posted in 2D to 3D conversion

"Titanic" represents the very best 3D conversion of a film that I've seen so far. - Drew McWeeny of HitFix

… what’s amazing is that for a movie that was shot in 2D, “Titanic” looks amazing in 3D – almost like it was meant to be in 3D all along. - Scott Mantz, Access Hollywood

If you like 3D effects, the film is worth seeing again just for them. - David Sexton, London Evening Standard

James Cameron and his team have applied 3D to 'Titanic' with intelligence, and often restraint. - The Telegraph

Titanic 3D: A 3D conversion that finally works. In terms of 3D, it is probably the best 3D conversion that has ever been done. Nothing is as good as a movie that is actually filmed with a 3D camera, but this comes close. Some of the most effective 3D scenes include all the water scenes at the beginning, the very first glimpse of present-day Rose,  and Jack gazing at the stars. There is no way to explain how amazing this looks. - The examiner

One Hour to Master 2D-3D Conversion

on Friday, 02 December 2011 21:46. Posted in 2D to 3D conversion

Many clever people have worked incredibly long hours and done some amazing things with 2D to 3D conversion, however, the brief up until now has been to just 'add some depth' to the movies. In return, the market has responded without much enthusiasm for converted films compared to films that were actually shot in 3D. But now - Thanks to FilmMakingWebinars- you may learn in 1 1/2 hour how to do it the right way using 3D CGI modelling software (in this case, Autodesk Maya and Flare).  Free access and preview here under.

Digital Domain 2D-3D Licensing

on Saturday, 17 December 2011 23:18. Posted in 2D to 3D conversion

Digital Domain (Port ST. Lucie, FL, USA) today announced its 3D conversion technology licensing program.

Patents: Digital Domain Media Group's subsidiary, Digital Domain Stereo Group ("DDSG"), formerly known as In-Three, owns six U.S. patents covering movies 2D-to-3D conversion. The DDSG patents provide fundamental coverage of any modern conversion process that involves rotoscoping (i.e., computerized, semi-automatic and semi-automatic conversion with roto), and relate to any conversion process that includes horizontal image displacement.

License program: Given the growth of the 3D market in theaters, home entertainment and other platforms, DDMG has elected to make its patent portfolio available now to companies through a studio-friendly program.

First licensee: The first such agreement was recently signed with Samsung Electronics (South Korea). This agreement provides a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use DDMG's patented technology for 3D conversion. The agreement allows Samsung to use the licensed technology in any kind of consumer electronics, components, services and software of Samsung and its affiliates.

2D-3D conversion services: DDMG will continue to offer 3D stereoscopic conversion services to film studios through its DDSG subsidiary, and will include select competing 3D conversion companies in this licensing program.

DDMG and it's competitors: DDMG's focus will be to actively negotiate licenses with its competitors while allowing them to continue to provide 3D conversion services to their studio customers so as not to disrupt current 3D conversion projects.

License enforcement: Where negotiations are unsuccessful, DDMG will seek to enforce its patent rights, as is the case with DDMG's patent infringement lawsuit against Prime Focus North America, Inc. and Prime Focus VFX USA, Inc.
